Quintana Roo

Quintana Roo is situated on the Yucatan peninsula at Mexico's far eastern extreme. The spectacular Quintana Roo Caribbean coastline is known as the Riviera Maya and is a highly developed and popular tourist area. Quintana Roo has a number of Mayan archeological sites to explore in addition to its gorgeous beaches.

The capital city is Chetumal, close to the Mexican border with Belize. Popular beach resort and vacation destinations include Cancun, with 30 km of hotel-lined beach, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, Tulum, Xcalak, Akumal and the tropical islands of Cozumel and Isla Mujeres. All of these beachfront areas offer excellent snorkling and diving sites, long stretches of white-sanded, palm-lined beaches, and ample opportunities beach and water activities or simply to relax in the sun. Close by Cozumel is the Great Mayan Reef, an enormous coral reef system that encompasses the Parque Marino Nacional de Arrecifes de Cozumel (National Cozumel Reefs National Marine Park) and the Parque Natural de Chankanaab (Chankanaab Natural Park). Take a trip into the the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve near Tulum, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and enjoy and observe the rich, natural flora and fauna.

Quintana Roo also is territory of the Maya, and there are a number of interesting archeological sites to explore. These include the ruins of Tulum, perched on cliffs overlooking the turquoise waters of the Caribbean, and the sites of Coba, Dzibanche, Chacchoben, Cahkanbakan, Muyil, Kohunlich, Xel-Ha and Xcaret, among others.
