Sonora
Sonora is one of Mexico's larger states in the north, bordering upon the United States to the north, Chihuahua to the east, Sinaloa to the south, and Baja California and the Sea of Cortes (or Gulf of California) to the
west.
The original inhabitants of this state, in which lies the hot and arid Sonoran Desert, were the Yaquis and the Mayos, both principally agricultural societies. Principal cities and towns of this state are Hermosillo, its capital, Cd. Obregon, the border city of Nogales, Navajoa and the beach destinations of Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point), San Carlos, Bahia Kino and Guaymas.
Rocky Point or Punta Penasco, is only a short distance from the U.S. border and this location has made it a favorite spot for visitors from Arizona and other parts of the U.S. looking for fabulous but convenient beaches and wonderful fishing opportunities. Close to Rocky Point is the Pinacate biosphere reserve, with enormous craters in an area rich with flora and fauna.
Guaymas and San Carlos form a beach resort area offering fabulous snorkeling, diving and fishing. San Carlos also has an 18-hole golf course and two marinas. Don't forget to visit the San Jose de Guaymas mission Guaymas itself, and take a trip to see the giant Sahuaro cacti at El Sahuaral
