The National San Marcos Fair

The San Marcos Fair of Aguascalientes originated in the year 1828 as an agricultural and livestock fair meant to broaden the market for these products in Mexico. During it's first years it was timed for the harvest period in November. In the 1840's land was donated by the Church for the construction of San Marcos Park, to which to Fair was moved in 1848 and at which point the dates of the Fair were modified to correspond to the days of veneration of Saint Mark in April.
Plaza San Marcos (bullfighting ring) was built in 1896 and bullfighting was from that point on integrated into the festivities. Cockfights have always been an important part of the festival and stiff regulations for this sport were implemented in 1874 governing all aspects of the fight.
The San Marcos Fair currently is an enormous, national cultural event that brings thousands of people to Aguascalientes between April 15 and May 10. Since 1924 it includes a beauty contest for the Queen of the Fair. Other activities and events offered are rodeos, music and variety shows, agricultural demonstrations and exhibits, art and antiques shows, puppet shows and other activities for the young, sports tournaments and races, theatre, ballet and other dance shows, literature and poetry contests and a prestigious Typical Mexican Dress competition.
