Chiapa de Corzo
Chiapa de Corzo is a short 15 kms from Tuxtla Gutierrez along the highway leading to San Cristóbal de las Casas. Chiapa de Corzo has several notable colonial structures to explore.
Close by, too, is the Cañón Del Sumidero National Park. This impressive canyon of the Grijalva River is easily accessible from Chiapa de Corzo and boat tours leave regularly from the river pier near the center of town. More info available on the Nature Reserves page.
The Chiapa de Corzo Colonial Fountain - Completed in 1562, this fountain, called La Pila, dominates the central plaza and was originally the main water supply for the city. It is constructed entirely of red brick with great moorish influence in the Mudejar style. It´s domed, octagonal form dominates the town plaza and the ornamentation on its sides and lights and shadows of its form are a fascinating sight. The fountain underwent restoration in 1944..
Ex-Convent of Santo Domingo - Religious compound constructed in 1554 by dominican fathers, Pedro de Barrientos y Juan Alonso. Home of an Art Museum and the Museo de la Laca (Lacquer Museum), displaying lacquer work, wooden carvings and sculptures, the embroidery of Chiapas and works of other cultural and artistic themes.
