Comitan de Dominguez

Founded in 1556, Comitán is located 90 kms from San Cristóbal de las Casas along Highway 190, at an altitude of 1660 meters (5447 feet) above sea level. Its attractive central square and park is bordered on two sides by fabulous wooden arcades under which one can have a coffee or snack while watching the townspeople pass by, many still in their traditional attire..

Comitan de Dominguez carries the name of Dr. Belisario Dominguez, a Mexican politician who was active in the struggle for freedom of speech in the early 1900´s, who was born in this city, and it is where the Independence Act of Chiapas was signed in 1824. Take a visit to the Belisario Domínguez museum which was once his home and reveals much about his personal, professional and public life, located just off the plaza (hours 10 am to 6:45 pm daily except Mondays). The Museo Arqueólogico de Comitan (Comitán Archaeological Museum) on the Plaza is opened to the public from 10 am to 5 pm daily except Mondays.

Near Comitan is the Montebello Lakes National Park where over 50 lakes are closely scattered in an area of dense forests (see the Nature Reserves page) and the ruins of Chincultik and Tenam Puente (see Archaeological Sites of Chiapas)
