Inaugurated on Nov. 25, 1988, the Regional Museum of Colima is housed in an old Colonial structure just off the town's main plaza. The airy central patio, surrounded by stately arched galleries, is often used for educational conferences, presentations and literary discussion groups.
On the lower floor are six rooms comprising the archeological exhibit. In these are presented an impressive collection of well-preserved prehispanic relics and a to-scale reproduction of a mortuary site of the Tumbas de Tiro. The second story of the museum consists of eight rooms housing the historical exhibit covering the period from the arrival of the Spanish invaders up to the Mexican Revolution, in which are presented a number of colonial antiquities and historical artifacts.
The Museum also includes two areas, one of which is the University Gallery, in which temporary exhibits and art shows are periodically set up. The Museum is under the auspices of the INAH (National Institute of Anthropology and History) and the University of Colima.
The Museum is located at Portal Morelos No. 1, on Colima's main plaza.
