The Carlos Pellicer Regional Museum of Anthropology, Villahermosa

Villahermosa's first archeological museum was founded by poet Carlos Pellicer with pieces collected by the poet as well as donated artifacts. The museum noow is housed in a new, modern building of the CICOM (Centro de Investigacion de Culturas Olmeca y Maya) on the banks of the Grijalva River, Avenida Carlos Pellicer No. 511, Villahermosa. Open daily 9 am - 8 pm.

Museum of History of Tabasco, Villahermosa

Opened in 1986, the Museum of History is located in Villahermosa in the Casa de los Azulejos (House of Tiles) at the corner of Juarez and 27 De Febrero streets, downtown Villahermosa. The House of Tiles itself is a historical landmark built between 1890 and 1915.

La Venta Archaeological Zone and Museum

La Venta, Tabasco

This archeological zone in which gigantic carved heads were discovered was developed by the Olmecs whose culture is believed to date back some 3,000 years. The site is located in the north-eastern part of the state, 121 kms from Villahermosa just off Federal Highway 180, near the border of Veracruz. The settlement of La Venta itself dates from the preclassic period, betwen 1000 and 400 B.C.

Yumká Park

Located 18 kms outside Villahermosa to the northeast, Yumká is a wonderful natural wildlife preserve. Guided tours are available through the parks multiple wildlife and ecosystems on foot, mini-bus and boat.tour. These ecosystems containing more than 200 regional animal species, 32 foreign animal species and over 250 plant species, including orchids and bromiliads. Some of the wildlife you may see in near-natural habitats during the tour include jaguar, jhowler monkeys, agouti and toucans. The park is open daily from 9 AM to 4 PM. Tel. 313-2390

Aguaselva

Area rich in natural resources and landscapes, waterfalls, jungles, river valleys and archaeological sites, located about 2 hours drive from Villahermosa . Tours and trips out of Villahermosa can be arranged through local tour operators.

Centla Biosphere Reserve and Swamplands

1.5 million acres+ of reserve at the confluence of the Usumacinta, Grijalva and San Pedro rivers encompassing mangrove swamps, lagoons, dense forests, canals and a wealth of natural resources. Extremely rich in flora and fauna. Boat tours are available from various points, such as the Ejido Nueva Esperanza and La Ranceria San Juanito for birdwatching and nature observation in the canals and lagoons.

Comalcalco Archaeological Site and Museum

Mayan site which was developed during the 1st century B.C., with the distinction that it is the only Mayan site with structures built of bricks rather than stone. Accessible from Villahermoa via Highway 180 to Cárdenas, then Highway 187 to the town of Comalcalco, 2 kms from the site, or via the road to Nacajuca, Jalpa de Mendez and Comalcalco. Open from 10 am to 5 pm.
